P-day last week in Nago

I left Naha. It was the hardest transfer I have ever had. The  ward came to the Church for Eikaiwa, because that was when I was leaving. I left with Elder Glover and Sister Sharp (She went home. Just finished her mission). I haven't had that hard of a goodbye since I left you all in Utah. Before Eikaiwa, I went to see Sunagawa Kyoudai (our blind member) and I thought that was hard. At the Eikaiwa, there were lots of tears. Everyone told me to come back to Naha. It was especially hard saying goodbye to the ward mission leader. He's been the best. Naha just became my home and I didn't want to leave. 

 

However, now I'm done with being a Zone Leader. I have a new "special assignment" from Kaicho. I'm in an area called Tamana. It's in Kumamoto, but I live in Omuta......which is in Fukuoka. In other words, I take a 45 minute train ride to my area everyday. There are 0 members that live in my area. I'm part of the Omuta branch, but I can't work with them a ton because MY area is so far away. The area was opened last transfer and nothing happened. Literally. Not one investigator. Kaicho wants me to pick it up. So far, we're doing good. We're finding investigators and stuff, but It's going to be hard getting people to church and stuff like that. Member present lessons will be almost impossible. It's going to be a challenge. However, this will likely be my last area. So, I don't intend to just "Find" every single day. I am going to do everything I can here. 

 

I'm living with Elder Nara and Elder Tabuchi. They don't speak English. And then my comp is Elder Kikuchi from Utah.  There isn't lots of English spoken here. It's fun. I hope I can learn lots of Japanese here.

 

SO, unfortunately, I don't really have anything to tell you all. So far, we've found 2 investigators. It's tough though. We'll see where it goes.

 

So, I hope I have lots to report on next week. I am working my butt off. I hit my bed hard everyday which is a good feeling. I love being a missionary and I'm not going to waste any time.

So, first things first, I have to ask you for a favor. Our mission has asked every missionary to complete the "my family" pamphlet by September. We're starting to use them for family history. I'm sure you've seen it, but in order to fill it out, I need Kanji for all the names on Mom's side of the family and I also am going to need pictures of the grandparents. I need to get that packet filled out ASAP. If you could do that it would be really appreciated.

Anyway, I had a crazy week with almost no time for normal dendo. We were in Fukuoka last Sunday through Wednesday. It was the funnest time. Probably too much fun for missionaries.

On P-day, after we emailed, we went back to the Honbu and asked what we could do for President and he gave us four tickets to the zoo across the street. He told us to have a good time and then at six go find some investigators for Fukuoka. So, we spent the day at the zoo and having fun around Fukuoka.

It was SO much fun. Elder Chung is one of the Elders in Okinawa and I don't know if you remember him, but he's pretty much my best friend in the mission. I've really been able to work with him a lot and he's one of the funnest people I know.

That night, I had the chance to work with Elder Fender in Fukuoka and we had a really successful day. We found 3 new investigators that were all really solid. It was wonderful. The next day, we had an awesome training from President and the AP's and then we went home to Naha to prepare for two trainings for the Zone. It's been a lot of training here. It has gone really well though.

We weren't able to really teach any of our investigators this week. It was really slow, but we had a little bit of time to go finding and we found quite a few cool people. We found a cute old couple in a tiny apartment. The Husband was watching Sumo and told us to leave and that he didn't need our message, but the wife said she would love to hear the message. We were able to teach her a little and make a new appointment. She said that her husband was going to yell at her afterwards, but that it was ok. Haha, it was way funny because right after that, we said a prayer and we could hear them bickering. He was saying that they had their religion and she was saying that she wants to hear what we have to say and that we had such pure hearts and all this sweet stuff. Haha, I hope the next lesson goes ok.

So, as you know, today is our transfer calls. I don't know what's going on yet, but I hope I stay. I really love this area and the people here. Of course I'll do whatever the Lord has in store for me. I just have come to really love these people.

Anyway, that was my week. It was a busy one. Maybe next week I'll be somewhere new. We'll see. I love you all and I'll talk to you all next week.

I am not in Naha right now. We flew up for Mission Leader Council. So, I'm spending P day with the Okinawa zone leaders in Fukuoka. I'm way stoked. It's going to be pretty fun.

Forgive me for today's email. I don't have a lot of time.

This last week, we had a exchange with the Yonabaru Elders. That is a tough area. The Elders there are working so hard. There is just not a lot of people home during the day. Also, with all the hills and heat it's really easy to get tired. However, those Elders are working super hard and they know what they are doing. I worked with Elder Miyanishi. I was so impressed. He had planned his day so well. We never had a second of time. We were going the entire day. He packed the day in so well, and he had his travel time down. I was really impressed. He's also a really good teacher.

Also this week, F came to church. I was really nervous because he's a really shy guy and he really doesn't like being in front of people. He really liked it though. He was taking notes during Sacrament meeting and he also had the chance to talk to the bishop about his situation with work and his physical problems. He has a mild back injury. The bishop was really good to him and we were able to figure out a game plan for F san and he seems pretty hopeful. We'll have another chance to meet him later this week as well. Things are just looking good with him.

Along with all that, we're still working as hard as we can. It is so hot. There is no way to not smell bad. I always have deodorant and all these other things to keep the sweat down, but it's not possible. I just feel bad knocking on people's doors looking like I just ran a marathon. It makes people wonder why we are out here though. AND we get lots of free drinks. Sometimes they are tea, but it's always nice to have people watching out for us. Okinawan people are either really really nice.....or SUPER rude....Or sometimes just crazy. It makes dendo fun though.

Anyway, I'm really sorry about this letter. I really don't have lots of time. I just hope you all know I'm super grateful for your support and I love you all! I'm doing the best I can. The church is true!

Elder Low

So, this week was a little rough. We got a surprise call on Tuesday afternoon. President called all the zone leaders for a Mission Leader Council. So, Elder Gordon and I left the next day to Fukuoka with the Ginowan zone leaders. Those Ginowan zone leaders are the best. They are fun and fun to be around, but they also know how to be missionaries.

So, we all went to MLC thinking that we were going to get yelled at. However, it was a really good meeting. Kaicho asked everyone to share specific plans in order to achieve our goals. We shared that one of our goals was to get the missionaries every teaching opportunity as possible. There are so many wards in the zone that ask the missionaries to teach Gospel Principles and we usually try to give that to the ward, but we talked about how maybe that's a really good teaching chance for the missionaries. When we shared that at MLC though, it seemed that a lot of the missionaries were bugged about it.

Some of the other zone leaders were talking about how Japanese isn't important to be a successful missionary. I think they might have had the impression that I'm leading a Japanese school. In the end, President backed me up and said he really liked the idea. Later in the meeting, he actually committed all of us to be teaching as many lessons as possible....including Gospel Principles in order for the missionaries to be able to speak more fluidly. I think a lot of the missionaries in the mission aren't learning this language. It's so difficult.

So, this Sunday, I gave a talk in church. I talked about the blessings of sharing the gospel. I talked about Mom and Dad and their "How they met" story. (by the way, all the missionaries in my mission think my parents have the cutest story. KACHAOW!) The ward seemed to be really touched. It was wonderful. After that, we taught Gospel Principles class, because the ward asked us to and then we taught a special PMG class to the youth of the ward. That's going to start being a thing here. The bishop was really pleased with us this last week.

As far as the work, our area has had a lot of neglect recently. We had the week away in Miyako and the week away with the Yonabaru issue and the trip to Fukuoka. All of our investigators have kinda disappeared. I was so upset with our numbers last night. However, we are going to pick it up this week. We still have our couple and we're going to go find a couple more people this week so we can start teaching people again. Our golden couple's appointment was the day that we were scheduled to come to Fukuoka so we had to postpone our meeting, but they are doing really well. I'm SO excited to meet them again. They are SO cool! I can' wait.

Elder Low

I had an unforgettable experience at church yesterday. It was pretty amazing. Elder Tashiro (Area Authority) came to our sacrament meeting. It was completely unexpected. The ward put his name as the only name on the program and everyone in the ward was very shocked and excited. He walked into the chapel and saw that his name was the only name on the program and thought that was inappropriate. So, he asked for the Bishop and two missionaries to bear testimony. He asked one of the sisters and my companion Elder Gordon. They didn't really have anytime to prepare, but they all gave great talks.

Then he spoke about Baptism. It was kinda interesting. Most of the congregation had already been baptized. Not that it's a bad topic, but I was a little surprised that he choose that. Anyway, it was a very, very powerful talk. Elder Tashiro is a very genki guy. He's pretty bouncy when he talks and has a lot of enthusiasm. He's really easy to listen to.

Anyway, in the middle of his talk, he started talking about our responsibility to share our baptismal experiences with our friends and people who don't know about baptism. Then he jumped into talking about this "friend" of his that sees lots of success in missionary work from testifying about baptism. He said that you could see the change that baptism had made on this friend. Then he said that the friend was going to come and speak for all of us. Then he looked right at me.

"Elder Low, will you come up here and share your Baptismal experience?"

I was pretty freaked out. He spent all this time talking about this "Amazing" friend and I was getting really excited to hear from this guy. I didn't realize that he was talking about me. I didn't even think he knew my name. Then, out of nowhere, he asked me to bear my testimony about Baptism. I made the long walk up to the stand. I had no idea what I was going to talk about so I just shared my Baptismal experience and my testimony. I'd never really felt so much about my Baptismal Experience. I was 8 just like almost everyone else I know, but for some reason, I started crying at the stand over this experience I was sharing.

Afterwards, Elder Tashrio jumped up and said, "Thank you my friend! I love you!" and then he hugged me. Haha, he's a great guy.

So, I threw that experience in the journal and smiled all day.

Also this week we went up to Fukuoka for our presentation on how we were going to help our zone.  It was kinda a weird meeting. He asked all the zone leaders to pull together a special presentation to show how their zones are doing. It would usually take a lot of time because there are 10 zones in our mission. We went first, and after our presentation, Kaicho (President) talked to all the zone leaders about what we were going to do and then everyone else only had about 5 minutes to present what they were doing. I felt pretty bad. The only thing we really talked about was the language of the mission. Most of the missionaries in the mission can't speak Japanese. ....Like, at all. We have missionaries that have been out for more than a year that still can't communicate with anyone. That was the main focus of most of the meeting.

Also, this week, Elder Gordon and I are going to be doing nothing but training missionaries. We have our ZTM on Tuesday, and then Kaicho is sending us down to Miyako for the rest of the week so that we can train the missionaries down there. So, we are going to be really busy.

Last thing, Y-san is done with all of her Cancer treatments! She's getting much better! I'm so excited for her. I've been praying for her since the beginning of my mission. It looks like the sisters can probably start teaching her this next week or so.

Things are looking good and I'm loving the work.

So, another great week. I was super busy all week long. Haha, it was pretty crazy. Last time I emailed you, I was just preparing to head off to Fukuoka. So, yes. I went all the way to Fukuoka again on Monday, and then came back on Tuesday afternoon. It was pretty ridiculous. We had a great meeting with President and the AP's and then he kicked all the Okinawa missionaries out before the closing song and prayer because we had a plane to catch.

It was kinda crazy. We were super behind and the Recorder and the MSM were driving us to the airport. They had to stop at a Family Mart so that they could buy the tickets and we were super behind and they just kinda strolled into the Family mart. The Recorder made sure to button up his jacket. Haha, I was losing it. We were supposed to be at our gate in 3 minutes and we were ten minutes from the airport by car and the Recorder was making sure he looked like a gentleman as he walked into the store. We were all yelling from the car "RUN" but I don't know if he was super urgent. Haha, he's a great guy though. Luckily our plane was delayed so we were able to board.

Then the next day, Elder Dursteler and I had to plan for the two training meetings this week. I didn't get a ton of time with my actual companion, but we spent our time together really well. We were able to find a new investigator that we are meeting on Tuesday that was pretty solid. Also, we had TONS of fun finding.....which weird because finding can get REALLY boring sometimes. It can also be really fun, but I'm talking CRAZY fun. Here's an example:

We met one of the craziest people I have ever met. She seemed like any other lady you would contact into. Haha, she was asking questions about God and the Book of Mormon and everything. I was about to hand her the book when she asked about the second coming of Christ. I responded with the doctrinal answer. We are preparing for the day that Christ will return.....but she believed something else. "He already came" she said. I was a little confused. Then she reported that He had been killed again. Killed on the cross once. Then He came back to the Earth and was killed....again. I asked where and she said in America. BUT here's where it gets interesting. A third and final god will once again come to the earth. Except for the this god is a woman. She was very sure to make sure we knew that the third god was a woman. She said that one this woman would come to the earth, she would purify the earth and make it a place of love and joy.....and here's the best part. She hands us her flyer.

I looked at the flyer and tried SO hard not to laugh. This third and final God was preparing the earth with the help from someone from the spirit world......Walt Disney. Yes, this Flyer said in big letters "God's Disneyland" and the flyer described how we would all get to live together on the Earth with Walt Disney once more in an eternal Disneyland.

I got a kick out of this lady and I figured dad would like it too. :)

In more serious business, K san was unable to come to church again. However, we got a new ward mission leader who seems like he will really help us out. Our last mission leader didn't want members picking up K san because he thought that he needed a way to get there by himself without our help. BUT our new leader says that we should drive him to church so he can be there. I totally agree. This new mission leader is named Sakihara Tomoaki. He just returned from the Sapporo mission. Apparently, he was an AP there and the mission president emailed the bishop of our ward and told him that Elder Sakihara was the best missionary in his mission.....so this guy knows his stuff really really well. I'm really excited for him.

Also, I spent twenty dollars on mints and gum for K san to quit smoking. It was totally worth it. He was laughing and throwing the mints and gum in the air maniacally. He was so excited and has completely quit smoking and drinking. It's been a miracle. Now we are just trying to get him set on getting to church. He's really excited for General Conference so that's exciting.

Other than that, I saw Jon's Mormon Message video. (See it Here) Freaking drugs. Shoulda left the party. You know better.

Well, we'll let you know how this next week goes. It seems like it's going to be a great week. Also, president just made a goal that every companionship in the mission makes a baptismal date by Easter. I'm super set on it.

So, this week was transfer week and I have a new companion. His name is Elder Wells. He's a pretty young missionary, but I like him a lot. Pretty quiet, but has a great heart. The poor guy was stuck with one of the most difficult missionaries in the mission last transfer and was about ready to kill himself. Things are quite different than with Elder Dursteler. He was pretty amazing. Still is. It's nice that he's still in my apartment. Also, he and I are going to Fukuoka tonight to be trained by president.....flying again. This is so much fun! But yeah. It's pretty great stuff.

Elder Wells and I have been really focused on helping K san. He's so close to Baptism, but he's been really struggling with smoking. He hasn't smoked for more than a week, but that's because he has no money to use. He's afraid that when he gets money, he will smoke again because he REALLY wants to smoke. Well, the other problem we were facing was that he couldn't get to church on his own. He has no way to get himself there....so we gave him enough money to use the monorail.....and he didn't show...

I was so worried that he had bought some cigarettes, but when we went to visit him, he had just slept in. He had the money in a little case and said that he was not going to spend it on anything, but getting himself to church. So, I'm really grateful that he's showing so much faith. Unfortunately, he didn't get to church, but his conversion is still coming little by little.

Other than that, we have really just been settling in to being new companions.

We are finding out that the biggest issue with some obedience issues is that some missionaries are not focused on the mission. They aren't focused on the people. President just shut down music in the mission and said if it isn't Motab or EFY it's not ok because people were listening to normal music like Pompeii by Bastille.....Yeah. I wasn't even home when that song came out, but everyone in the mission "Justified" it for some reason. It was pretty bad. So, now we are working with some disobedience out here. So that's a thing. Something that Elder Dursteler does not do well with. He gets pretty mad when there are disobedience issues. It's scary. Haha, It's really easy to be obedient around him. Not that I had a problem before.

So that's what's going on. I'm really happy and I love this ward so much. Things are pretty stress free. My biggest concern is what tie I'm going to wear to Fukuoka tomorrow. (BTW thanks for the package. I just barely got it!)

As you know, today is transfer day. Sorry I didn't warn you earlier this week. I'm staying. No surprise there.....BUT, here is one interesting change about this week: Elder Dursteler is still the other Zone leader.....but he's not going to be my companion. I am now with Elder Wells. Poor guy wasn't on the Christmas card......so you can't look him up that way. Hahaha, the honbu kinda forgot about him for the christmas card. BUT he's a great guy. He has an interesting personality. He doesn't smile a lot, but I think he's a really happy guy. HAha, just kinda a tough guy. I'm really excited though.

Also, in other news, we're still working with K san......and he quit smoking. He's only quit for 6 days....but that's still pretty good. We're really excited for him. He started showering and dressing nicely every day.. Also, he doesn't have any suicidal thoughts anymore. It's amazing to see the difference. You can see how much this gospel has already blessed his life. We're coming quickly up on his baptismal date. We're going to have to see him just about every single day from here on out. His date is the 6th of April.

I don't really know what else to tell you. I'm going to try sending pictures through the computer today, but we'll see what happens.

I'm really excited for this next transfer. We're going to be seeing tons of miracles. I can't wait.

.....until then, we have a lot of stuff we have to accomplish. We have to go to the airport and help all the new elders come in and all the old elders go out. Then we get to fly to Fukuoka again....I don't know. It's kinda nice. I get to feel like a really rich guy. The honbu pays for me to go to Fukuoka and back....It's a pretty pricey ticket.....I'm really lucky.

I love the pictures of Grandma and Grandpa's new rooms. Made me laugh a little bit. Grandpa really likes his guns....Kinda a scary room. ;)

I have had a really busy week this week. I flew up to Fukuoka and had a great time with all the zone leaders in the mission. It was kinda weird. I had just been in Fukuoka two days earlier....It's crazy. My mission just spent a couple thousand dollars on me so that I could come up to Fukuoka. I feel really blessed. Also, because we have the islands Miyako and Ishigaki in our  zone, we had to have a special Skype training meeting with the two islands. In other words, Elder Dursteller and I have spent the last week training the zone about what we learned from Fukuoka.

The zone is really great. Lots of cool people.... My companion Elder Dursteller is WAY out of my league. His Japanese is perfect. His teaching is amazing. He's a spiritual giant. I feel so bad. I'm trying to keep up. He's just a really really good missionary. I'm learning so much from him.

This week, we made another Baptismal date with our investigator. He's kinda crazy....to say it simply, he randomly cancels appointments and then shows up to them anyway. It's gotten to the point that we just show up when he cancels and he still comes. BUT he is really interested in the Book of Mormon and wants revelation from God.

Other than that, this next month is Zone conference and the mission is going to have a 7 to 8 hour zone conference. President Gustafsen is having all the missionaries prepare to demonstrate how to do all aspects of the work. I'm so so excited. It's going to be really fun.

Other than that, I'm still working hard and we're still seeing great success. The Ward is great and HUGE. I can't wait to see more miracles. We have already been so blessed.

So, we had a pretty eventful week.  I got to go up to Fukuoka on Tuesday which was a blast.

We stayed in the Fukuoka house (6 Elders in one house and then we added another five....It's pretty big) and I got to eat at McDonalds.....I had something called a "Hot and Groovy Burger"....I don't know about America but the Japanese Mac's are doing this vintage burger thing.......It was sooo good.

Then, the next morning, I went to the Fukuoka Stake center and had an interview with Elder Aoyagi of the First Quorum of the Seventy.....He is such a boss. He asked what the biggest struggles in my mission are right now and gave me some awesome advice. He committed me to finish the "Lesson Mastery" program. I'm finishing that up tonight. However, he promised that if I did it, people would listen to me. He asked me to say a prayer at the end of our interview and then he said, "Elder Low...I love you . You have such a light about you. You are a very special Missionary."  It was such a special experience.

Then we had a missionary conference with him. He's amazing. I was so pumped at the end of the conference and the Spirit was SOO strong.

On top of that, I got to see Elder Redd AND Elder Wirthlin. It was the first time we were all together. It was a blast. We ate lunch together. It felt kinda weird though.....haha, Elder Redd accidentally called me Randy. I love those Elders.

Well, after coming home from Fukuoka.....I got sick. Haha, it was a real bummer. I had to spend the day at the Apartment and I felt so bad for my two comps because they had to sit and stay with me. I also got to wear one of those masks all week.

I announced to the branch and Eikaiwa (English) class that I will probably transfer this week. They were all SOO upset. It was really hard to say goodbye to my Eikaiwa class. Haha, all the moms started crying. Most of our English class students are teenage boys and their parents. Apparently all these teenage boys talk about me a lot. Anyway, the parents want to change this whole "transfer" system because it is terrible.....It made me really sad that I'll probably leave them.

Also, today I have a couple appointments with branch members so I can say goodbye....Haha, I haven't even got the call yet....I think  I'm out though.

Then yesterday, I got to go on splits with Elders Coelho and Malcom. We found two new investigators! It was miracle. We had a wonderful day and worked really really hard all day long.

It was a really good week. I guess I'll let you know how transfers go....but I think I'm out of here. I can't wait to find out!

So, I had a pretty rough week this last week. We set high expectations as a companionship....and it didn't turn out so well. Haha, lots of appointments fell through and we are getting rejected quite a bit.

I don't have a whole lot to report.....Oh! Tomorrow is Elder Chantry's birthday......he will be 19. Haha, He's super young. .....or I'm just a really old missionary. ;) BUT we celebrated with some sushi the other day.....That always makes me happy. I'm kinda scared for when I go home. I don't know what I'm going to eat. Cooking in Japan is completely different from cooking in the U.S.....And yeah.....I eat Natto. Every day. Everyone keeps telling me it's really healthy so I eat it a lot.....I actually like it now. Elder Chantry and I buy a different type of Natto every week. Today we bought some with some kind of black liquid......It's WAY good. :)

On Tuesday, we are going up to Fukuoka. I'm pretty excited. We are having a conference with Elder Aoyagi....That isn't until Wednesday though. On Tuesday (I don't know why) Elder Aoyagi wants to interview me along with a couple other missionaries in the mission.....I'm kinda freaked out. Haha, I think it will be good though. I just have these bad thoughts that he's going to put me in front of a camera and make me speak Japanese and then show it to a bunch of other missionaries or Japanese leaders and show them how bad my language skills are......I'm sure that's not his intention though. ;)

That's the big thing of the week though. It's looking like it will take a lot of time out of our week. Also, I have no more district meetings for the transfer....so that's a downer. Speaking of which, next week I will be emailing on Tuesday because of transfers.

I love this branch so much. I love all members, but I feel so bad that we aren't bringing Investigators to church. They seem to be very supportive though. They still ask us to come eat with them and visit their friends. We'll find the Investigator that Isahaya deserves.

Elder Low

So, I watched the videos of you guys flying your new robot. My first thought was, "wow....my family are all such dorks...........I kinda want to try flying that thing though...." Haha, looks like fun.

 

However, I no longer recognize the voices of Sam or Clint.....kinda freaking me out.

 

So, this week we had three new investigators. One of them is named Saori. I told her my mom was named Saori and she flipped out. She seems really good. Also, we met two Chinese investigators. One is named Shu. Haha, apparently he called the Jehovah's Witnesses once to ask them about their church and they thought he meant "Shu" as in the Japanese word for The Lord.....A little Japanese humor but he's way interested in Christ.

 

The Sisters in Nagasaki have an investigator who is about to be baptized. She's a 14 year old girl. Her mom is a member but wanted her to choose to be baptized on her own and she's finally ready to be baptized. We are all really excited.

 

So, I'm a little on the edge right now. I'm worried, but I'm sure it will be ok. I had a crazy baptism study session yesterday. Read Moroni 8 and the district leader packet and PMG. It was kinda fun. :)

 

I have a really busy week this week and I'm super pumped. You may have noticed in my photos that I spent the last week with Tendonitis. I woke up last pday from a nap and couldn't move my wrist...It hurt SO bad. I had to go see a doctor from the mission. He told me to wrap it....so I looked kinda　funny all week. People kept asking me what I did and it was a great dendo tool.

I also saw Elder Mormon Redd at zone taikai. That was a blast. We went up to Fukuoka and talked about the commitment process....kinda what we did in mission prep all the time. It was a nice review.
